Image via WikipediaA Lodge cast iron dutch oven is the gold standard in dutch ovens. They come with a flanged lid to hold hot coals and a lid that inverts for use as a griddle. Along with a strong bucket style handled for carrying and legs to allow the oven to sit perfectly over hot coals.
These dutch ovens are still manufactured by Lodge Cast Iron, a family owned and operated business. Lodge is one of America's oldest cookware companies and still owned and managed by the descendants of the Lodge family.
Founded in 1896 by Joseph Lodge, Lodge cast iron dutch oven's are still produced in its foundry in South Pittsburg, Tennessee, which has been in operation since the company was founded.
It's privately held metal formula, precision molds and exacting mold wall thickness are the result of years of dedication. Expensive stainless and aluminum cookware can't rival the even heating, heat retention, durability and value of a Lodge cast iron dutch oven.
A Lodge cast iron dutch oven is never complete until countless meals, desserts, soups and stews are prepared in it to create a beautiful black patina. Only then is cast iron "seasoned."
Well Lodge has even addressed this issue, when in 2002 they developed a proprietary vegetable oil spray system with high temperature gas ovens to season the cast iron dutch oven before it leaves the foundry. A no hassle, seasoned finish everyone can use right out of the box!
Happy cooking,
Greg
